DeepSeek V4 Flash on a Single AMD MI300X

They claimed that OpenAI and Anthropic have positive gross margins. I don't think there are many credible claims saying that's not the case (at least for API usage)?

Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI

I don't think it's Kool-Aid, I think it's "Apple has notoriously low salaries for a FAANG and OpenAI will probably have a trillion-dollar IPO". You can see right through Altman's charade and still want to work for him for equity.

The AI Demand Bubble

He's saying the demand is artificial because it's all from Anthropic and OpenAI but they have revenue from paying customers of about $74 bn and $49 bn annualized respectively. If those went under the customer demand would still presumably be there. And it's not like those numbers are static - they are probably up several times on a year earlier. In July 2024 Anthropic's annualized revenues were ~$0.5 bn when Ed wrote >And yes, that sound you hear is the slow deflation of the bubble I've been warning you about since March... >How does GPT – a transformer-based model that generates answers probabilistically (as in what the next part of the generation is most likely to be the correct one) based entirely on training data – do anything more than generate paragraphs of occasionally-accura…

Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI

It's probably not as much of a joke as we want to believe, given the current administration in power and the potential 5% stake in OpenAi via Kushner's firm, and how SamA can just pull the "national security...Chinese labs something something" argument along with some bribe money and potentially make this whole thing disappear. With the corruption so blatant and on public display now, and with how much the labs have been trying to sell "too big to fail" to the government, the standard rules no longer apply when it comes to anything involving these labs.

The AI Demand Bubble

There is a lot of demand for AI denial, but nearly everybody who is capable of writing even semi-coherently on the topic recognizes AI denial in general as cope, and has too much moral dignity to propogate their coping denial for personal gain. So the ~one guy who doesn't gets around.

When AI Benchmarks Plateau: A Systematic Study of Benchmark Saturation

Yes, it turns out that matrix math over a feature space of math works pretty well because unlike poetry or real world work, maths are internally coherent and entirely theoretical.

U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war

A lot of the problem is with the current commander in chief's not very good strategy. Iran is huge and populous and would be very expensive to occupy with boots on the ground so no one really wants to go there. Trump thought he could just bomb their military assets and government and things would all be ok but the Iranians have been planning for that for ages and have everything distributed, duplicated and protected. A more normal leader might consult with allies who have been dealing with Iran for decades and make a coherent plan but he ignores them, tariffs them and threatens their territories. I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. He could launch 100% of the US's missiles at Iran and still not achive much.

AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog

Manually written content with an AI teaser image is perfectly acceptable to most people, including technical audiences who dislike AI writing . The teaser image isn’t the content. Most people consider it part of the web design or setting the tone for the article. There’s a very vocal minority who will get turned off by AI anything right now, even when it’s not part of the main content. Some times a good blog post will land on the HN front page and it will collect complaints that the layout or web design looked too AI generated so those people didn’t read it. I don’t think it’s a big loss. Blogs have attracted a peanut gallery of picky critics forever. > She’s had to figure out where the line is though. Mosh in a Lift (2012)

The predictive echo mechanism in Mosh is still the gold standard for high-latency or intermittent connections. This elevator test case perfectly demonstrates why handling packet loss at the application layer beats standard TCP-based SSH when the physical link is failing. I wonder if modern QUIC-based terminal emulators have managed to replicate this level of responsiveness without the stateful synchronization overhead.

Don't be a meat proxy

They suck at multi-threading, they suck at maintaining a coherent goal through multiple files, they suck at basic math (claude could NOT figure out how to get the hypotenuse of a triangle given angle and side lengths...). Sometimes I mess around with prompts just to see what I get back, more often than not, it's mostly a waste of time. God forbid you use it to refactor anything.

US Military asks troops for 'creative and unconventional' ideas to punish Iran

> Could be deliberate theater. The real plan is a containment and a slow economic collapse of Iran anyway. Doesn't seem like there's a coherent plan. What you are saying is the old plan from long before Trump, that was torpedoed. Going back to that is saying they've failed in whatever this was. Also that is iran's plan as well, survive while the US suffers and eventually gives up like Vietnam ... > If the EU and Japan pay higher energy costs, that is an added bonus for Trump. US also pays added costs... and Trump is hurting from that The only one profiting is China since they've mostly transitioned away from oil...

AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog

It's weird to observe that trend in house decor, first it was mark of wealth, after that when cheaper methods to replicate the look (and some might be even more smooth than doing it by hand) it flew down to cheaper and cheaper had that look, while "wealthy" moved to simpler one, often just showing off amount of space or some expensive material used. And now more simple looks trickled down too

Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)

Yes, there's certainly more to it. Just to jump on the uncanny valley vector, I'd argue that the artist having a coherent message they're trying to get across and the viewer having some affordance primed for receiving that message is critical.

AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog

This hasn’t been my wife’s experience at all. She manually writes all her content, but uses AI images as sizzlers for the scenes (fan fic for popular shows). Short of getting the actors together for a million bucks, she’d be hard pressed to make these scenes a reality. It’s also supposed to be aspirational, like “what if the tv cast got back together for another season hey?” I think the average person just doesn’t really notice. She’s had to figure out where the line is though. She tried using ElevenLabs to dictate her scripts, thinking it’d make things more convenient for her fans, and that lost her subscribers because they seemingly disliked the more obvious use of AI.
