The Shape of Things to Come, Part 2: Model Welfare for Agentic Engineers

Hmm. I think, based on some of Anthropic’s interpretability work, that models may have states analogous to emotions, and my own functionalist stance on consciousness lets me easily agree that if so, there is something that it is to be those states. Though without knowing exactly what they are subjectively or how similar they are to our own experiences. However, the “self” that the model has, its identity, is something that is created during post-training. This was something pointed at by the J-Space research. The model learns during pre-training to model humans in a general sense and then (and I’m taking some liberties here) turns that model inwards to model a trained notion of self - how “Claude” should react to this or that stimulus. It’s the same machinery that the model uses to model …

Ask HN: Dear Anthropic, can we please have thought traces back?

> Opus 4.6 remains the best model because of this. Huh? Are you not trying other open-weight models that stream thinking traces? The new DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731 should clobber Opus 4.6 in a lot of tasks. Kimi K3 and GLM 5.2 feel like they stand toe-to-toe with Opus 4.8 in my experience. This probably isn't the last stupid decision that Anthropic stands on, you might as well hedge your bet and put some money into another inference provider and see how it goes.

Dear Anthropic, can we please have thought traces back? I can't verify whether or not the LLM is arriving at the conclusion from cheating, or if it's fudging or making stuff up. Opus 4.6 remains the best model because of this.

It's not a fear of "AI communism"; it's a fear of competitive market capitalism

I don't think the open source models are anywhere near ("we’re talking around four months of lead time") Anthropic's Fable for long-horizon context planning. Sol isn't either. The benchmarks are quite misleading. The short-term question is how many customers need these deep problem solving capabilities? The long-term question is what will the frontier labs build (deepening and broadening of capabilities and products) if they are capitalized as they desire?

Ask HN: Are you working 996 hours?

• 996 schedule • Ads all over SF that just have our logo with no context • Hacker house in Pac Heights • Shared space in Hayes (for calls) • Tech stack is Next.js/React/OPENAI_API_KEY • Product is AI SOC-2 verification • The company will fail, I'll pivot into real estate

The AI Demand Bubble

He's saying OpenAI would collapse in 12-24 months back in 2024 if they didn't raise more money than any other company in the history of the valley, but didn't they? I'll give you that it seems from what he tweeted he didn't expect them to be able to pull it off, but it also seems like he correctly laid out what they would have to do to survive, and then they did it.

They already offer “superior models at a premium price” but the issue is that they are not that much superior than the open models and in some cases are even worse(I.e Anthropic Fable refuses to fix a login/signup page, not to mention any kind of actual opsec work). You already can do more with open models than with proprietary models because you can’t tweak the proprietary models to your liking. Just as OpenAI and Anthropic went from 0 to a trillion they can go back just as fast.

The AI Demand Bubble

>The actual risk that the author does not even broach upon for investors... the thing that will actually torpedo this massive investment are the open source open weight chinese models that commoditize the entire endeavor. If you don't have a monopoly, you cannot rugpull and 6x the costs on the consumer. This is the thing: let's just reason it out. What if OpenAI and Anthropic both fail and end up in bankruptcy? What is the impact to the hyperscalers? ...they just start selling open weight model inference to businesses, or whatever other entity picks up the scraps from the collapsed labs. It's abundantly evident that there's major demand for compute, and that it isn't going anywhere.

Show HN: Product analytics (and evals) for agent sessions on your MCP

does this conform with the OpenAI/Anthropic telemetry/data collection terms? (they have some "weird" language around chat data and specifically around telemetry (though mostly around memory/history rather than current conversation);

> I've never touched the Chinese models (no particular reason) but it is having an impact as the frontier companies are pushing the price down as a defensive measure I warn you that it is addictive. I am using DS and MiMo on Pi.dev, and I don't see myself going back to OpenAI. They are criminally cheap in a way that I don't care to spend tokens. That leaves me space to experiment. And in terms of capability, well... I use Sonnet and Opus at work (provided by my employer), and I see no difference in terms of what I can achieve. Well, besides Claude costing dozens of times more.

The AI Demand Bubble

> His value as a prophet of the AI bubble is going down by the day Is it? I don't think this is really true. For example he's spent some time talking about Oracle's relatively more dangerous exposure to OpenAI. Here he is back in April: https://shows.acast.com/the-tech-report/episodes/how-openai-... Here's S&P in July, downgrading Oracle specifically because of their exposure to risks from OpenAI . https://www.spglobal.com/ratings/en/regulatory/article/-/vie... > and he's been predicting it for a while now (2024) Like I said elsewhere, the first accurate, detailed, correct predictions of the subprime crisis were made four years before it finally unfolded. There's likely at least one more round of funding to come for bo…

Apple is getting this wrong

Apple: OpenAI brazenly ignored our lawyer when he contacted them about this treacherous industrial espionage. OpenAI: Sorry but your lawyer never really contacted us because he was incompetent and maybe even racist. More entertaining than anything on TV /popcorn Which makes me wonder, is it normal for giant corporations to very publicly lob lawsuits after just a couple of failed attempts to connect with the other party?

AI's debt binge can't last, hidden borrowing reaches $1.65T

AAR says that U.S. freight railroads collectively invest approximately $25 billion per year in capital expenditures and maintenance. By comparison, OpenAI got another $110 Billion alone for their next round of funding. U.S. private AI investment climbed to $285.9 billion in 2025. the difference here is that we know how the railroads work, and how to make a profit off them -- PE squeezes notwithstanding. the sports car I drive probably came here via train. meanwhile AI uses more electricity than Bolivia to make poorly formatted Powerpoint Presentations for useless meetings.

The AI Demand Bubble

The failures of past doomsayers are important to keep in mind. It’s hard to say “well, but we know things they didn’t know at the time, but this time that won’t happen.” I will observe, however, that Uber’s revenues come from consumers. Consumers are never going to be willing to spend enough on AI to justify OAI and Anthropic’s spending, even if a single company captured all of their demand. They recognized this and pivoted to software engineering and enterprise customers. These are much more sophisticated buyers than someone trying to catch a cab or get a burrito delivered, and more able to be patient or expend resources to find a better, cheaper provider. It also bears mentioning that if any particular AI lab manages to survive and succeed in the way Uber has, there will be several mult…

Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI

I think it's notable that Apple is vague about what was actually stolen and what OpenAI has actually received. I read into these PR blasts, lawsuits that Apple is sour about losing employees to higher salary opportunities, and is likely using lawsuits instead of higher salaries to retain them.
