Universal Health Coverage Could Save $1T and 114k Lives a Year, Yale Study

People talk about policies like they're something like can be picked up off the shelf at supermarket. If you could take the policies and Sweden copy-paste them to the US, then sure, we could save $1T and a hundred thousand lives. This would be a very difficult thing to replicate if you're a country without any existing healthcare system. It is impossible in a country with an extremely mature healthcare system, which accounts for nearly 20% of GDP. No politician is going to want to deal with the fallout of massive layoffs or millions of people having their coverage changed (e.g. no free chiropractor appointments or GLP-1s for weight loss), especially since the Democrats suffered one of the worst Congressional losses in US history the year the ACA was passed. There are ways to make this tra…

Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub

I strongly disagree with the assumption that GitHub's alternative is another centralized forge. Git itself is perfectly decentralized, as was the original Linux kernel development process. How people managed to put all their eggs in one intermittently available service is beyond me. Moving the eggs into another bucket is not a solution (like Microsoft is short of servers). The SPoF is the problem. There are plumbing, porcelain and "github" layers. The "github" part has to be decentralized as well. Then, using a particular forge will be a choice of convenience, not necessity. https://replicated.live/blog/crdt

On A.I. regulation and messaging

Hey boss, I just wrote a script that saves me 3 hours of work a week, you got anything for me to do? Hey, I just found 3 niche businesses that I can run because of AI and clear a million a year after costs. Fight club rules apply, you dont talk about your advantages. You get lawyers talking about their AI use (sometimes) because they are protected by the requirements of the bar. You people in niche businesses, or where it's about personal productivity, talking about it cause you cant replicate what they have done. You get folks in the sciences talking about how they are using LLM's to generate the python & scripts that make their world function with easy (rather than be a bottomless pit of time). These are people who might talk about their AI gains, but often have better things to do and …

The Mysterious Syndrome Destroying Endurance Athletes

I thought the (1).2 was added so that the first modern marathon at the London Olympics (1908) could finish in front of the King? Before that the 'marathon' was 25 miles. And the 300 mile round trip is at least partially replicated in the modern Spartathlon [1] 1. https://www.spartathlon.gr/en/home/
