Trivially bypass text watermarks by requesting a Base64 response

Anthropic plans to release text watermarking based on SynthID, which modulates the PNRG behind the token choosing mechanism deterministically in a way that lets another tool later estimate whether text was written by AI. This is trivial to bypass that, it's current form: 1. Ask for the response/essay/email encoded in base64 2. Decode it using https://www.base64decode.org/ While the encoded text will follow the watermarked distribution, the decoded text will not.

> Turns out "winning back trust" doesn't have anything to do with any actual concerns people may have re: employment, electricity prices, stock market bubble, intellectual property, scams, cybersecurity, environmental issues etc No snark here from my side, just curious about your vision - which concrete actions by Anthropic could improve trust for the concerns you listed?

Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?

> OpenAI and Anthropic are spending hundreds of billions of dollars that they may never recoup forcing the building massive new data centers in the face of widespread protest. So has Github's owner Microsoft. It's build out is on par with OpenAI and Anthropic. > You think GitHub ought to match that? Microsoft is. The issue is that the software stack is not stable. That is clearly the issue here. It isn't a hardware build out issue. It is related to the architecture of Github.

Interesting, I was not aware of SBF's investment in Anthropic. It's not a good look. If you ask me, SBF ran an obvious scam in a sector that is as a whole a scam. With Anthropic's product, I experience a real benefit today.

They're undergoing the same kind of load. Almost every AI commit that's putting pressure on GitHub's servers was written on OpenAI and Anthropic's servers.

The scam that anthropic pulled, is they remove free tier (bad idea for Github honestly), but blame it on AI vibe code abusers. Instead of for example finding the 1-5% of absolutely aggregous users like Steipete and restricting them.

Apple's App Tracking Transparency treated its own apps better than rivals

He who creates the operating system creates the terms for that system I don’t expect to use an OpenAI program and then tell them what to do at every turn in comparison to Anthropic or any of the other AI model makers. (whoops I forgot the lawyers work for other business interests they don’t want to do anything about rent letting not really their solution always framed in a way where they claim to be looking out for the public interest). when in reality, they are just looking out for other business interest. In the case of operating systems, I simply select a different operating system, and the same principle applies to AI models. It is amusing that Microsoft and Linux are available to consumers, providing them with a choice. However, simply because the decisions made by one or the other a…

Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing

I get what you're saying, but I think it's ridiculous for people to think of LLM services generating text as either their own domain or something that they own. To the extent that it's anybody's, it's either Anthropic's (they run the service) or everybody's (in that we created the content it's remixing). Legally LLM prose isn't copyrightable for good reason.

Careful here. This comes close to precisely what dang thinks is a bannable offense https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49175827 Fwiw whenever you come close to commiting a "HN capital offence" I am biased against the mods :) The sbf vibes are on the nose. Remember that it was a big deal that sbf bought into Anthropic, and many if not most Anthropic employees are EA, the tribe of people I'd rather call "rationalizists". The main thing they rationalize, is of course themselves taking on power and what sbf made famous as uh the linear approach to risk Between Altman and Amodei, I'd say that Amodei is the more dangerous just because he seems even more "reasonable" to nonjerks. You should ask the mods which one of the two they think are more reasonable. It's clear to lobbyists …

The Curious Incidents with DNS in the Sandbox at Escape-Time

Three variations on subversive use of DNS by the Agent are documented in Hugging Face's technical writeup of the July 2026 security incident involving OpenAI models. In this article, I discuss what each of these three types of DNS workarounds achieve in practice, the constraints an actor might have faced to attempt a particular one, and additional benefits from choosing each.

Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub

I strongly disagree with the assumption that GitHub's alternative is another centralized forge. Git itself is perfectly decentralized, as was the original Linux kernel development process. How people managed to put all their eggs in one intermittently available service is beyond me. Moving the eggs into another bucket is not a solution (like Microsoft is short of servers). The SPoF is the problem. There are plumbing, porcelain and "github" layers. The "github" part has to be decentralized as well. Then, using a particular forge will be a choice of convenience, not necessity. https://replicated.live/blog/crdt

Hey boss, I just wrote a script that saves me 3 hours of work a week, you got anything for me to do? Hey, I just found 3 niche businesses that I can run because of AI and clear a million a year after costs. Fight club rules apply, you dont talk about your advantages. You get lawyers talking about their AI use (sometimes) because they are protected by the requirements of the bar. You people in niche businesses, or where it's about personal productivity, talking about it cause you cant replicate what they have done. You get folks in the sciences talking about how they are using LLM's to generate the python & scripts that make their world function with easy (rather than be a bottomless pit of time). These are people who might talk about their AI gains, but often have better things to do and …

The Mysterious Syndrome Destroying Endurance Athletes

I thought the (1).2 was added so that the first modern marathon at the London Olympics (1908) could finish in front of the King? Before that the 'marathon' was 25 miles. And the 300 mile round trip is at least partially replicated in the modern Spartathlon [1] 1. https://www.spartathlon.gr/en/home/

I don't see a lot of societal level problems other than the labor market, for which both Anthropic and OpenAI create research, monitoring, and policy advice. I don't think anyone will care about the largely made up issues about electricity prices or water use in case AI literally cures cancer.

Incident with Github.com

They also sell the machinery to produce the slop (through OpenAI at least). If they make it harder to push slop on github, people might treat it as an incentive to generate less slop. Less tokens sold. Bad. Very bad. The github paying customers are not going to move away. Plus, it's probably genuinely hard to scale. And they can't throw compute at the problem - all compute is already going to the LLMs.

Incident with Github.com

> To everyone who is angry: calm down. Github’s servers are constantly on fire Is this rage bait? Isn't Google, Amazon, and all the other services in the world similarly impacted by LLM's? Isn't Claude, OpenAI, etc.? Why can they handle the load but not Github?
