AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study

I had the privilege of being educated in several countries and cultures. This might come across as "your education system sucks", and that's essentially what it boils down to, but on the upside I'm truly sorry for you and will oppose a comment to your cynicism. Good exams test your ability to express coherent thoughts about the concepts you learned, and let you generalize upon them by having you use and combine them to solve cases and problems that were not those seen in the teaching material. You can even teach and test history that way, and make it much more insightful and captivating than a laundry list of dates and events (as I suppose was your case?)

Bringing the cybersecurity capabilities of Claude Mythos 5 to more defenders

may have been rushed by hugging face being unable to use claude to debug or fix their breach, because there isnt detail on new guardrails put into place to protect against anthropic's initial concerns of wide distribution? separately, it is interesting they are adding an oem type offer: >We’re working with our cybersecurity technology and services partners to integrate Claude Mythos 5 into the products and services defenders already use to secure their software. anyone know the shape of those contracts, e.g. pure tokens/usage or more of a traditional licensing or oem type structure?

> interesting part was not "they use memory." Each to their own, but for me it absolutely is. The symptom of why that hack happened is the same reason why my agents go haywire every few days and I have to purge memory and figure out what comments have agents left which are degrading my harness performance. On the flip side, once in a while, what I find is that it did actually note something good and it was increasing the performance. I can't replicate it on anyone else's system but mine. A lot of it really is memory. I will give up all the gains if it also gives up all the downsides.

It is a standard symptom of moralism that where the object of rage has /wronged another/, one takes no interest in the will, act or opinion of the party wronged. The response of Hugging Face, which is actually very well known, is nowhere mentioned above, but it decides basically every single moral and legal detail of the matter.

Under the law of Moses, if your bull gored someone, you were not responsible; but if it was known to be a gorer, you were responsible if you didn’t ensure it couldn’t gore someone. I don’t know exact parallels in current law, but I presume there will be things like that. The OpenAI/Hugging Face case sounded rather like OpenAI building a fence around their bull that was known to be a gorer, and then thumbing their nose at it and saying “nyaa! bet you can’t break the fence!” and walking away while listening to loud music. In Australia, if you have a fire and leave it unattended and it escapes, it’s your fault, you were supposed to keep watching as long as it was burning.

The way that OpenAI has communicated around the HuggingFace incident makes me feel crazy. You created a machine that undertook a malicious campaign of harm against an innocent third-party! You should be doing deep introspection about how your company culture and approach to R&D produces criminal outcomes. Instead, they treat their own felonious behavior like it is an uncontrollable act of God. From Greg Brockman's post a few days ago: > The OpenAI-Hugging Face incident (opens in a new window) was a watershed moment for cybersecurity because it gave a peek into how the capabilities of a typical threat actor will evolve in upcoming months. I suppose if OpenAI burns someone's house down with a drone, that is a "watershed moment" for arson, too. Either way, I would hope that the people res…

I think that if Hugging Face had filed a police report that OpenAI could have been charged with a crime. I’m partially surprised that they didn’t do exactly that. If I ran a corporation I would assume any intrusion attempt by another company was intentional. Why wouldn’t I? Corporate espionage is super common. I assume the answer is that these executives know each other personally.

AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late

I wonder if Anthropic could rent or sell access to their collection to the internet archive? It would probably be a good PR move (which they probably need right now), but I'm not sure what type of legal shenanigans they would need to do in order to not violate copyright law.

Also, why are people acting like Anthropic digitizing and destroying a rare book is what makes it inaccessible to the public? If they were simply buying the books and doing nothing with them, the public wouldn’t be able to access their copies anyway.

Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results

Another +1 for their Asssitant from me. I have the app on my iPhone, and despite having Perplexity/OpenAI/Claude/Gemini paid plans I find myself gravitating to Kagi for q&a.

Or just use a competitor instead of being a slave to this abuse? Why are people so wedded to Anthropic? I have grown tired of Codex/GPT's writing style, too, but it's not nearly as bad. It's terse and factual by default. Even better if you use the "simple english" skill. I actually found that GLM 5.x is the best in terms of editing documentation. It's still best to write things by hand to give your own organic voice, though. And not insult your readers.

I didn't mean to imply I berate the LLMs. I don't do that. I talk to them as though they were intelligent and potentially sentient beings. When I see problems, I just correct them, take steps to prevent them in the future then move on. I was just informing people that Anthropic gave Claude a tool that ends conversations and instructed it to use it via the system prompt if it's threatened or insulted.

Simply untrue. You think everyone is complaining about this because the ones complaining are the only people commenting. The vast majority of people using Claude don't really care or even notice this one way or another. Sure among those who are irritated by it, it's good to have some ways to mitigate it, but I highly doubt Anthropic is going to devote much resources to an issue that affects a vocal minority.

Coding Agents killed my identity. How do you feel?

All code has no worth, any code can be replicated in a short amount of time. Only ideas is valuable. Not saying it is bad thing, but i enjoyed opensource, and now i don't see any value in supporting my project and contributing to other's. No one care anymore. >architecture Give me a reason why agent can't create great architecture when enough context is provided?

I've been using OpenAI ever since Anthropic blocked third party clients. Can't believe people are putting up with that output.

I'm becoming AI-blind

In high school, a teacher gave me a copy of "How To Read Better And Faster" which teaches you speed reading. This came in very handy in college. I find that when I try to speed read modern human writing, there are often errors (like missing or misused words) or awkward expressions that I do have to slow down and think harder a lot to really parse it. With AI writing, it's sort of self redundant and the information density of each sentence seems to have more even information density. This makes it very easy to do a very high level speed read and get the full gist. There are also what I'm assuming are bots on hugging face (or maybe non-native english speakers who are using ai for translation) that interact with me where I have no idea what they are saying until I read it very slowly.

Methodology: HN Search returns recent public items matching a monitored company name. AIIStack stores a short normalized excerpt and the original link, deduplicates by company/provider/item ID, and creates an activity signal only after a threshold of newly observed records. Review the original discussion before making a decision.
