Taste Is All That's Left

I think there's a coherent argument lurking in there, but the author hasn't refined it enough. Here's my attempt. The industrial revolution seemed like the end of the artisan as an important man in his community, the death of good taste, and an apocalypse for professions like furniture makers. And yet, do you remember the Aeron chair, darling of the dotcom era startup? The Eames chair, that wood veneer conversation piece which every real estate agent chooses when staging an apartment? In an era of mass production, taste moves up the market, but it never quite goes away. Where does that leave our taste, dear reader? I am not sure. What I do know is that, just as the Aeron chair could not exist in a world without mass production, so too will there be tasteful software which cannot exist in …

Improving GPT‑5.6 Sol in ChatGPT, expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna access for free users

OpenAI can very plausibly target ads far better than Google can. Email is a good window but lots of people talk in more depth with a chat bot. Search is a good “purchase intent moment” but people are telling a chat bot exactly what they care about in a purchase, rather than making indirect search terms and reading review sites.

No, that's backwards. OpenAI are the ones investing in Cerebras. Part of the deal is that they can't sell to Anthropic.

Taste Is All That's Left

I found this post a bit too verbose and incoherent. It does read like AI slop to me, but the bigger issue is that its core argument itself seems flawed. The author seems to be advocating for choosing to "carry the burden" of one's taste (or aesthetics, judgement, standards, etc) while bemoaning that the market may not sufficiently reward for doing so. IMHO, the core flaw is in mixing these two things 1) the market rewarding what it chooses to reward; and 2) individuals choosing to pursue some external/internal rewards. I broadly agree with the premise that Gen AI has lowered the cost of software development and, as a result, the quality of the idea and its execution have become more salient differentiators than just the ability to bring an idea to reality. I also agree that pursuing …

Improving GPT‑5.6 Sol in ChatGPT, expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna access for free users

> For Plus and Pro users, we’re updating GPT‑5.6 Sol in Chat to be more reliable with facts and provide more focused answers. I was not impressed with 5.6 and this hits exactly why. Also, this instant, medium, and high slider situation we now have everywhere is batshit crazy. It’s a major step back in technology. I’ll put money on the table there will be a surprise in revenue because users have no clue what to choose, so they are constantly choosing high because they don’t want to risk getting inaccurate answers. If this was intentional by the dark patterns department, then brilliant. However, I’m guessing Anthropic and OpenAI are struggling to know how to deploy their models. Also, the models were already amazing. They need to slow down and do a model release once a year and only do e…

Lines of code. 1,596 BTC gone

Maybe it’s just me but (and I ask this as something of an ML practitioner myself) can anyone at Anthropic or Open AI or any of the frontier labs work on summarizing content into a format where a human won’t immediately vomit? There’s this sort of local optima all these models pick which is instantly recognizable and hardly digestible for human consumption. Perhaps too much internal RL against benchmarks during chain of thought? The older non reasoning models had they’re own problems but at this point I can’t get an LLM to summarize data for humans, which is troubling. As much as I’d like to read this piece it follows suit and I don’t have the patience to try and extract anything valuable from it.

It doesn't fit their own definition of AGI, although it's inevitably vague [0]: >artificial general intelligence (AGI)—by which we mean highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work [0] https://openai.com/charter/

This is cope. All of the Chinese labs are publishing papers describing their models and each one contains actually novel approaches and solutions. In a few months when they surpass OpenAI and Anthropic, what will be the excuse then?

Didn’t Anthropic acquire Cerebras? Seems like a move into the same direction. I also think that etching models into ASICs may be a bit too inflexible for what OpenAI and Anthropic want.

Show HN: Whisper transcribes 70-year-olds more accurately than 20-year-olds

FYI I find that Whisper is far from the best transcription models out there as well. I did a bunch of testing and I found that Assembly AI's transcription models are significant better than Whisper and even ElevenLabs. I guess I now sound like an ad.
