OpenAI and four rivals just agreed on one standard for AI agents

Kinda misleading title too no? Is MCSFT and Vercel actually "rivals"? Last time I checked it was Anthropic and Elon that we're doing the rivalry. And yesit does sound like gate control - and also maybe this is another one of those attempts to fill in the news cycle with the familiar narrative "wow they're so powerful now they need to be standardized and reigned in"

Qwen3.8 Max now ranked as the best overall model by agentic index

Oh I do. Headless 128GB RAM machine serving llama.cpp with a number of local models that I use on a daily basis. • Qwen3-VL picks up new images in a NAS, auto captions and adds the text descriptions as a hidden EXIF layer into the image, which is used for fast search and organization in conjunction with a Qdrant vector database. • Gemma3:27b is used for personal translation work (mostly English and Chinese). • Some small 8b models (like llama3.1) for sentiment analysis on text. But haven't really tried using local LLMs in conjunction with agentic harnesses yet.

OpenAI's ring-shaped smart speaker will reportedly cost between $300 and $400

> Sources told Gurman that the product would have a ring-shaped design about the size of a hockey puck. The form factor is meant to be battery-powered and portable, so a user could easily carry it around with them. If there is any company I would hope people weren’t carrying a microphone around for, it would be OpenAI.

> HLE, AA-LCR and AA-Omniscience are now graded by GPT-5.6 Luna (medium), replacing GPT-4o, Qwen3 235B A22B 2507, and Gemini 3 Flash Preview respectively. These checks are now unified under a more capable modern model, selected for strong agreement with human judgment in our grader validation Interesting that they chose a nano-sized model from OpenAI to be a grader for benchmarks involving knowledge and hallucination.

AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon

Is there any LLM from exactly one year ago that would be worth running? In Aug 2025 you had - OpenAI o3 - Opus 4.1 - Gemini 2.5 Pro - Grok 4 Even if those were almost free to run, you'd be way better off with Deepseek flash 0731 or GPT 5.6 Luna, which already are almost free. Other than for things where the t/s are critical, it seems like a bad idea to etch a model into silicon.

Aws is an infrastructure company that builds services on top of that infra to sell more of it at a higher margin. Anthropic trains models on AWS's (and GCPs, and Microslop's) infrastructure, then skims margin off of selling inference also on the infrastructure owned by the other companies. These are extremely different businesses.

Microsoft filings suggest "around 70%" of its AI revenue is on OpenAI

The msft-openai tie-up is probably the least concerning of the "circular" deals since it's a natural outgrowth of a rather pedestrian investment/incubation. I'm not saying you're saying that, just pointing it out.

Because Openai and anthropic are not hardware companies. They outsource that to Broadcom and AWS' Annapurna labs.

> How tolerant are models today to a few broken weights. Extremely! You can remove entire layers and the model will still work just fine, with barely perceptible capability losses. I've cut/bypassed ~15% of total parameters out of Gemma 4 31B on a pod once. Still got perfectly coherent responses out of it. Certain layers are a lot more important than others, particularly early and late ones; but it's honestly astonishing how much can be cut out from the middle without destroying the model's coherence. I didn't run any meaningful benchmarks, so I have no idea what the capability loss looks like exactly. But "produce coherent and sensible English in response to a wide variety of prompts" was definitely not among the things the model unlearned.

I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux

Me: We need a phone. You: We're there. It's a bad phone. This thing works as a laptop replacement. You'll even be able to use it as a trackpad some day! This reads like satire. You guys are so out of touch with consumer expectations that you can't even string together a coherent argument in favor of these devices you so love. Even if it was a viable phone, are we really calling mid-tier 2016 performance, from a device which was discontinued due to being under-supported by its manufacturer and dev community, as being "there"? We are most certainly not "there". On the JS, a strident supporter is saying he has to disable JS. Convince him his experience isn't real, not me.

GitHub Actions and Pages are experiencing degraded availability

It's not too hard to switch over from GitHub actions to other runners. For example, I wrote up the steps needed in order to use Hugging Face Jobs instead, which also enables GPU runners and other flavors. I use this for several of the repos I manage (such as Trackio): https://huggingface.co/blog/github-ci-hf-jobs
